H & R Johnson, digonal sailing vessel design

H & R Johnson tubelined dust-pressed tile with a design of a small sailing vessel set diagonally, tubelined in brown with polychrome coloured glazes, 4" square, 1924. The sails are painted in rich orange glaze obtained from uranium. Tiles of this type were set in as a single example in slabbed fireplaces of the time. The back also features the name Sherwin and Cotton, indicating the tiles was made at the Eastwood Works, taken over by H & R Johnson in 1911.
