William de Morgan, Chelsea, Merton and Fulham

William Frend de Morgan was born on 16 November 1839 and became a major figure in the Arts & Crafts Movement and a close associate of William Morris. He was a skilled potter and was fascinated by early lustre pottery which he strove to imitate. He created many Islamic inspired tile designs which he produced at a number of potteries in Chelsea, Fulham and Merton Abbey from the 1870s to the early 1900s. After retiring from pottery he had a successful career as an author.
